Skinner Asian Works of Art Auction Oct 18

Skinner Auctioneers will host an auction of Asian Works of Art on Saturday, October 18th at 11:00 a.m. in its Boston gallery.
Highlights include a Buddhist painting (lot 150, est. $40/50,000) from 13th century Korea; twenty-nine prints from Hiroshige (lot 20, est. $8/1,200) from the Kyoka Tokaido; two modern Japanese prints (lot 35, est. $8/1,200) Woodpecker by Kawano Kaoru and Girl with Rabbit by Ikada Shuzo; and a Chinese ancestor portrait (lot 105, est. $8/1,200). Asix-panel 18th century Japanese screen (lot 76, est. $1,5/2,500) of a village landscape; a 19th century Japanese six-panel folding screen (lot 79, est. $2/4,000) of flowers on gold ground; a Chinese Ivory screen (lot 554, est. $8/1,200) set in rosewood; and a Korean screen (lot 148, est. $3/5,000) from the 20th century.
The auction also features several impressive jades. Of particular note is a water buffalo (lot 306, est. $60/80,000) probably from the Ming period carved in celadon green stone; a pair of Chinese table screens (lot 327, est. $30/50,000) in white jade with scenes of the Immortals.
A gilded jade figure of the Goddess of Mercy (lot 305, est. $30/50,000) from the Ch’ein Lung period (pictured); and a pair of bowls (lot 307, est. $5/7,000) with the four-character Ch’ien Lung mark and of the period. Three panels of a jade book (lot 313, est. $12/15,000), also from China’s Ch’ien Lung period, in gray-green nephrite, will draw great interest.
Also featured is a stone stele (lot 224, est. $7/9,000) from 12th century Northern India of the sun goddess Surya; a Korean lacquered box (lot 254, est. $3/5,000); a mixed metal vase (lot 615A, est. $2/2,500) from Japan’s Meiji period; and a pair of Oviform jars (lot $3/5,000) from the K’ang His period, China.
Several bronzes will grace the sale, with highlights including a gilt-bronze image of a Taoist Deity (lot 220, est. $6/8,000); a Sino Tibetan gilt-bronze figure of a Buddha holding a smoking censer (lot 741, $1/1,500); a Sino-Tibetan gilt-bronze image of a standing figure of Manjushri (lot 742, est. $1/1,500); and a Tibetan 17th century wrathful deity wearing a tiger skin and holding a double vajra while trampling two serpents (lot 743, est. $1,5/2,500).
Previews for the sale will be 12 to 5 p.m. Thursday, October 16th, 12 to 7 p.m. Friday, October 17th, and 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, October 18th.
