Martin Johnson Heade Painting Auctions for More Than $1million

The painting “Haying on the Marsh” by Martin Johnson Heade from the 1860s depicts three figures stacking hay as the sun sets.

It was the biggest sale Eldred’s auction gallery has made, said Bob Eldred, one of the owners and president of the East Dennis business. Pre auction estimates put the value of the painting at about $500,000.
