A first edition of the 1543 book, “De revolutionibus orbium coelestium” , in which Nicolaus Copernicus presented his theory that the sun was at the center of the solar system has fetched more than $2.2 million at a New York auction, nearly doubling the estimated price.

Christie’s called the volume offered for sale “arguably the finest copy in private hands.”
