Record Auction Price For Storm Landscape Set At Gateway Gallery

Published May 18th, 2008

The Gallery, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, was packed to capacity, on Saint Patrick’s Day, with original artwork, quality furnishings, and unique collectibles, but the most sought-after items were the 19th-Century Revival furniture, the 1851 Colt Navy revolver, and the George Storm Pennsylvania landscape oil on canvas, which brought a record-setting price.

Pennsylvania artist George W. Storm’s (1830-1913) work can be found at the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg and in numerous private collections but does not often come across the auction block. The 46-inch by 29-inch landscape painting, in the need of restoration, grabbed the attention of phone bidders and live auction attendees as it soared to $5,750 – a record auction price for a Storm landscape.

Excitement didn’t slow for the furniture, either; with the 19th-Century Revival large sofa selling for $2,100. Auctioneer John F. Kohler, Jr., barely slowed his chant, and the crowd heard the hammer drop as the Revival parlor table found a new home for $4,400.

Another item drawing intense interest was the 1851 Colt Navy revolver with matching serial numbers going to a phone bidder for $1,600. (Prices given are the hammer price and do not reflect the 10 percent buyer’s premium.)
