Sotheby’s American Paintings Drawings and Sculpture Auction

Sotheby’s spring sale of American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture includes works by prominent American artists from the 19th and early 20th centuries, many of which come from distinguished Estates. The 215 works are estimated to sell for $52,615,000/77,205,000* and will be exhibited on the 10th floor galleries at Sotheby’s New York from May 17 to 21. The sale will take place at 10am and 2pm on May 22.
Highlighting the sale is a masterpiece of American 19th century painting, The Peaceable Kingdom with the Leopard of Serenity, by the most celebrated American folk art artist, Edward Hicks. Arguably one of the most important and beautifully preserved examples of the more than sixty-two versions of this profound subject painted by the artist, this iconic work, circa 1846-1848 (lot 60), is estimated to sell for $6/8 million.
