Ohio Land for Auction May 17

Published April 25th, 2008

Approximately 600 acres of land in the heart of Ohio’s Amish country will be sold at auction Saturday, May 17, with Albert Burney Auction Company managing the sale. Sugarcreek earned the name of the “Little Switzerland of Ohio” because of its diverse Swiss, German and Amish populations.

The property, which will sell in 21 tracts, includes land suitable for hunting, ranchettes, private estates and residential development, according to Warren Ward, president of Albert Burney.

“It’s rare to have such a wide variety of property in one auction, but this land surrounded by Amish farms and businesses is amazingly versatile. And the location couldn’t be better. The area attracts thousands of tourists every week, and much of this land can be used to serve those visitors,” said Ward.

Bidders may bid on tracts ranging from approximately 3.7 acres to approximately 239 acres.

Seven tracts along the western side of Leihley Hill Road are being marketed for their potential as private home sites, but they may also be combined into a site of approximately 33.4 acres with extensive frontage on Copperhead Road and Amber Road. “When combined, the road frontage makes these tracts excellent for commercial, retail, lodging or other uses,” said Ward.

Several interior tracts ranging from approximately 10 to approximately 35 acres feature views of the Amish countryside.

Much of the property has been used in recent years by a hunting club, which has consistently enjoyed large harvests, including a rare 27-point buck.

“We have eight tracts that can be combined to make up more than 500 acres that can be used for hunting or development. This land has a number of ponds for use in hunting mallard, wood ducks and geese. It also has a number of trails for horseback riding or four-wheeling,” said Ward.
