Las Cruces Police vehicle auction raises $78,225

The Las Cruces Police Department took $78,225 during during an auction of vehicles seized under the city’s forfeiture ordinance which is designed to keep repeat drunken drivers off the roads.
The Feb. 2 auction included 130 vehicles that sold for an average of $601 each. Money generated from the auction is placed in the DWI seizure fund and can be used to purchase equipment for the police department’s DWI-related operations.
“The best thing about this program is that it gets a potentially lethal weapon, an automobile, out of the hands of a repeat offender,” Police Chief Harry Romero said.
