International airlines face the prospect of the US government’s auctioning some of its most valuable landing and take-off slots in New York’s airports in order to ease congestion.

Airport auctions, especially those that would remove existing landing and take-off slots, have provoked much criticism from US and European airline executives, who argue that the plan would unfairly limit their access to New York and defy elements of the “open skies” policy that granted American carriers freer use of European airports.
