Baltimore Washington Monument photo not sold at Sothebys auction

Published October 17th, 2007

No one bid on a rare photo of Baltimore’s Washington Monument that dates to the 1840s.

On Tuesday, Sotheby’s auctioneer opened the bidding for the daguerreotype of the monument at $30,000. “Passed,” the auctioneer announced shortly thereafter.

The photo was expected to fetch between $50,000 and $70,000.

Daguerreotypes are early photographs in which the image is produced on a light-sensitive, silver-coated metallic plate. The photo of the monument is believed to have been produced in 1845.
