Bonhams Inaugural Sale of European Paintings in New York City June 28

Bonhams is to hold its inaugural New York sale of European Paintings, presenting a variety of continental works from Old Masters to Modern. The June 28, 2007 sale will feature more than 140 works, highlighted by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Peeter van Avont, Ardegno Soficci, Edouard Cortes, Giacomo Guardi and Hubert Robert.
The sale commences with nearly 50 works on paper comprising Old Master and 19th century drawings and watercolors. Among the highlights is a festive Venetian canal view in gouache on paper by Giacomo Guardi (est. $10/15,000). Also included are two watercolors by Edward Lear — most fetching is his view of the Nile at Melawi. The work, dated 1867, shows a fishing boat plying the waters under a crimson sunset as a flight of geese passes overhead (est. $8/12,000). Works by or attributable to artists such as Hubert Robert, Pierre-Paul Prud’hon, and Thomas Rowlandson are expected to interest collectors.
