1957 Gibson guitar auctioned
Published April 18th, 2007
A rare Gibson electric guitar from 1957 sold for five times the expected price at Eldred’s Auctioneers on Cape Cod, Mass., last month, making it one of the highest prices paid for a non-celebrity-owned guitar.
The bidding was pushed to $220,000 with the final paddle raise coming from a New York dealer prominent in the musical instrument trade. It is presumed that he was bidding on behalf of a well-known musician. The guitar was sold by the estate of Dr. Robert T. Barry, a Cape Cod surgeon, who purchased it new in 1957 and played it as an amateur throughout his life.
