Auction of documents offered by anonymous King associate called off

A small collection of letters, notes and speeches once believed to belong to Martin Luther King Jr. was taken off the auction block on Thursday.

The documents were set to be sold on Sunday at Gallery 63 on behalf of an anonymous woman said to be a childhood friend of King’s. The King family opposed the sale and immediately began investigating the matter.

Gallery owner Paul Brown said Thursday the Gallery 63 auction will take place, but the King papers will not be included. ”The papers need to be further evaluated before they go on the open market,” he said.

He said the gallery has reached an agreement with the King estate.
