Illinois Internet Crimes Unit to crack down on online crime

Earlier this month, Gov. Blagojevich unveiled an Internet Crimes Unit Web site with the goal of cracking down on Internet crimes. The public will be able to visit the Web site www.isp.state.il.us/icu for answers to questions regarding Internet crime and to report suspicious online behavior. With the start of this new program, a new branch of Illinois State Police was formed, the Internet Crimes Unit (ICU) as well as the “Net Smartz” program for children.

“The purpose of the ICU is to combat online crime, give the public a way to report crime and to give tools and training for children in order to prevent them from being victims of online predators,” Lt. Scott Compton of the Illinois State Police, said.

Some examples of what the ICU will be looking to combat include any type of Internet crime, such as wire fraud and financial crimes, such as eBay scams, and the main objective is protection for children on the Internet.
