American car sells for record $5.5 million at Barrett-Jackson auction

A 1966 Shelby Cobra “Super Snake” sold for a whopping five-point-five (m) million dollars, a world record for an American car sold at auction according to The Arizona Republic.

The only surviving dual supercharged factory Cobra, this Supersnake was Carroll Shelby’s personal car. “When I built this dual supercharged 427 Cobra in 1966, I wanted it to be the fastest, meanest car on the road,” said Shelby. “Forty years later, it will still kick the tail of just about anything in the world.”

Car collector Ron Pratt of Chandler was the winning bidder, adding the roadster to his world-class collection of rare vehicles.
Pratt already held the previous record for the highest-priced American vehicle sold at auction.
