Rare nickel not sold in Orlando auction

Published January 3rd, 2007

A rare nickel, owned by a Spokane man and thought to be worth around $5 million dollars, was not sold at auction today.

The coin is one of five known 1913 Liberty Head nickels. They were struck clandestinely at the Philadelphia mint after its design was retired.

At the auction in Florida today, bidding started at $4.5 million dollars, but no one made an offer.

Bruce Morelan, a lifelong collector of coins from Spokane, paid over $4 million for the coin two years ago.
