A 19th-century painting depicting the immediate aftermath of a sleigh accident and small works by the Group of Seven were among the highlights of Joyner Waddington’s Fall Auction of Important Canadian Art on Tuesday.

Run Off The Road In A Blizzard by 19th-century painter Cornelius Krieghoff sold for $307,000, more than double its presale auction estimate.

Two other works by Krieghoff also sold in excess of $150,000 during the course of the auction, which attracted fierce competition among bidders in the packed auction gallery in Toronto and international bidders who were participating by telephone.

An Algoma oil sketch by Group of Seven member J.E.H. MacDonald sold for $252,000, 10 times its original presale auction estimate of $25,000.

The Bay, a tiny oil sketch by Group member Franz Johnston, sold for $82,800, four times its estimate .

Another member of the Group, Arthur Lismer, saw a result of $69,000 for Sunglow, Forest, B.C.

Other highlights included a small oil on canvas — Rock In The Bay — by David Milne, which sold for $86,250, and Farm Near Knowlton, QC, a canvas by Nora Collyer, which brought $62,100.

By the end of the 250-lot session, the total was expected to be more than $4 million.

The sale concludes on Wednesday morning with an additional 250 lots being offered.
