Steve McQueen items make $1.5 million

FANS yesterday spent more than £1.5 million at an auction of Steve McQueen’s belongings – including £36,000 for a pair of the actor’s sunglasses- as some items went for up to 100 times more than had been expected.
Fans from around the world vied with dealers after the star’s widow, Barbara, sold everything from his beloved cars and motorbikes to such mundane relics as a ballpoint pen and a favourite baseball cap.
A spokesman for auctioneers Bonhams said “the top five captains of industry in the world” had left bids before the sale, or bid live via telephone during the event, held at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. They were believed to include Bill Gates and Donald Trump.
