Fossilized dung at Austin Texas auction

Published July 31st, 2006

This weekend’s Frontier Times Western Auction in Austin, Texas, offered a variety of items, but none as strange as a 50-million-year-old piece of dung.

The Austin American-Statesman said, as of Saturday, the fossilized crocodile refuse, known simply by auctioneers in attendance as “the turd,” had not been sold despite its unique nature.

Also up for bid at the Old West-oriented auction was a captured Nazi flag, a binder full of Ku Klux Klan memorabilia and even a cartridge from the day infamous sniper Charles Whitman went on a shooting rampage at the University of Texas.

The event is being held by the Ben Hur Shriners of North Austin and was scheduled to continue on Sunday morning.

The highest accepted bid at the event as of late Saturday had been $2,800 for a 19th-century cavalry set, the paper said.
