Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile USA Inc., and the founder of Cablevision Systems Corp. are among those approved to participate in a wireless spectrum auction that the government expects to raise as much as $15 billion.
The Federal Communications Commission announced the status of applications in a notice dated July 7. The agency said it has approved some 81 applicants to bid in the Aug. 9 auction. A large number of bidders are small, rural companies.
The government also rejected applications by some 171 firms as incomplete. The bidders who have failed to win approval have until July 18 to resubmit their applications, and must make initial payments known as “upfront payments” by July 17.
