Hopkinton land auction raises concerns

As the sale of more than 600 acres of land next to Weston Nurseries in Hopkinton looms nearer, town officials are still hoping to guide development on the parcel.

Weston Nurseries will auction 655 acres July 29 with an asking price of $29.5 million to $37 million, said Gary Furst, president and chief executive of Weston Nurseries.
The land is owned by Wayne and Roger Mezitt , the brothers who also own Weston Nurseries. The two were forced to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October for the gardening business after years of disagreement over how to run the company started by their grandfather.
The sale will allow “the business to come out of Chapter 11 and be a strong entity and for the parties to go their separate ways, hopefully in a constructive, positive way,” Furst said of the auction.
If the land, which has been on the market for more than a year, isn’t auctioned by the company, it will be sold by a bank at a foreclosure auction Sept. 27, Furst said.
