Animation art, rock collectibles, film memorabilia and Hollywood movie posters come to auction at Bonhams & Butterfields in a two-day sale in Los Angeles on June 25 and 26, 2006, featuring rare and treasured cartoon imagery from major studios and master illustrators.
A spectacular array of animation art – from Auggie Doggie through Woody Woodpecker, nearly 350-lots, will open the summer auction at the world’s third largest fine arts auctioneers. The sale includes favorite cartoon characters from the 1920s and ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s, through the 1990s — from early Disney classics to celluloids from the contemporary Fox hit The Simpsons — and much in-between. Exhibits and previews of the lots open in Los Angeles on June 23, the illustrated catalog is online at www.bonhams.com/us.
A pair of 1928 Disney Studios drawings depicting Minnie and Mickey Mouse stem from the first produced film to feature the rodent who would become one of America’s favorite cartoon characters. The drawings stem from Plane Crazy, a silent film later re-released with sound as Steamboat Willie (est. $800/1,200). Another early Disney lot on offer features a watercolor on paper production background from the 1929 film The Karnival Kid, the first film in which Mickey spoke (est. $1,500/2,000). Other Walt Disney lots feature scenes from Fantasia; Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs, Bambi, Dumbo, Pinocchio and many others.
