Monhegan Island’s Red House For Auction - June 24
Published June 13th, 2006
Monhegan island is one of Maine’s favorite summertime spots. Artists from around the world come to the island to capture its special beauty. Now, one of the island’s best known landmarks is up for sale.
The red house has been part of Monhegan as long as anyone can remember. It was originally built in the 1780’s by island patriarch Harvey Trefetherin and has been rebuilt many times since.
The red house has been attracting the eyes of artists for more than a century. The experts tell us thousands of paintings have been done of the house, including some of America’s best known artists. Jamie Wyeth’s painting of the red house is currently on display at the Farnsworth Museum.
But now, because of a family disagreement, the red house is up for sale. It’s scheduled to be auctioned off on June 24th. Auctioneer Tom Satterly says he’s been hearing from people all over the country, and beyond.
