Fort Montgomery for sale on eBay

Published May 20th, 2006

A northern New York fort is up for sale on the online auction service eBay.

Victor Podd of Florida says his family has owned the Civil War-era Fort Montgomery for 23 years and this is the first time it’s formally for sale.
The fort is located on an island in Lake Champlain, in the Adirondack village of Rouses Point. The estate includes nearly seven hundred feet of lake frontage, about 300 acres of adjacent mainland and 88 acres of land underwater.
So far, Podd says the high eBay bid for the fort hasn’t met the reserve price. As of yesterday, the highest bid was at one million dollars. The auction ends June 5th, and Podd won’t say what the reserve price is, although he notes that it is below nine-point-nine million.
The limestone fort was built in 1844, and was manned during the Civil War but saw no action. About 80 percent of the structure was demolished in 1935 and used for fill as the first bridge to Vermont at Rouses Point was built. It’s also suffered much vandalism and will require a lot of repair to make it safe.
