Wichita taking surplus auction online

Published May 19th, 2006

Interested buyers won’t have to stand out in the weather to participate in this year’s surplus equipment auction by the city of Wichita.

The auction is going online.

The city made a deal with Purple Wave Auction Co. of Manhattan, Kan., to conduct the auction Tuesday, June 6.

The auction includes vehicles, a loader, a tractor, a paint booth, two propane systems, a mobile water tank and some plastic water meters.

“Some of these items have been considered surplus and with us only having an annual auction, it’s like holding these items for almost a year in some cases,” says Sherry Shockey, buyer for the city of Wichita.

Shockey says this online auction is an experiment. Once the results are in, there will be a decision on whether to conduct future auctions exclusively online or use a combination of online and traditional on-site auctions.

The Purple Wave Auction Co. Web site is www.purplewave.com.
