Anne Arundel County to auction off surplus property

Looking to get surplus government-owned property back on its tax rolls, Anne Arundel County said Wednesday it will auction a one-acre piece of Edgewater real estate formerly home to a police station.

The property being auctioned is on the corner of Route 2 and Virginia Avenue, in the southern part of the county. It’s the former 40-year home of Anne Arundel’s Southern District police station.

The property is located in a C-2 commercial office district, county officials said, and has been appraised by the state at $1.1 million.

County Executive Janet Owens said in a statement she hopes Anne Arundel residents will benefit from the sale with a boost to the county’s general fund. If the appraised value is not met, she added, the property will be withdrawn.

The auction includes the 6,600-square-foot brick building. An open house is scheduled for April 11 from noon to 2 p.m., and the auction will take place April 18 at 11 a.m.

The Maryland Department of Transportation began ramping up its own real estate efforts in 2004 after Gov. Robert Ehrlich made selling unused state-owned real estate a priority. The state has received about 20 offers for downtown Baltimore’s World Trade Center building.
