Seguin Horse auction a success

There was no reining in bidders at a wild mustang auction Saturday at the Guadalupe County Fairgrounds in Seguin.

More than 90 bidders at the Bureau of Land Management auction made sure all 70 horses found new homes, offering bids a spokesman called “spectacular” and causing today’s auction to be canceled.

“It’s probably the most phenomenal sale that we have on record,” said bureau spokesman Paul McGuire. “There was a remarkable showing of support.

“If we had had a hundred horses we could have adopted every one.”

One bidder paid more than $1,000 for one weanling. “That’s the highest I have ever seen for one horse,” McGuire said.

“It goes to show that the people of South Central Texas have a thorough understanding of protecting this valuable natural resource,” he added.

McGuire said the agency will hold a similar auction next October at the San Antonio Rose Palace on Boerne Stage Road.
