About a dozen sticks of dynamite were found in a concrete building on the 25-acre former missile site at rural Southwest 72nd Street and Nebraska 33.State Patrol bomb experts spent most of Friday trying to stabilize the explosives with chemicals. Crete Fire & Rescue, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office and the Southwest Rural Fire Department also responded. The dynamite probably will be detonated on the site, but authorities on Friday didn’t know when. A fuel cell underneath the building complicated efforts to dispose of the dynamite, which was at least 10 years old and unstable, said Lancaster County Sheriff’s Deputy Steven Phillip.
The explosives were found in a small building on the north edge of the property, which sold for $52,000 Thursday. Miscellaneous tools, farm implements and machinery had been stored in the property’s four buildings, said Norm Ford of Ford & Ford auctioneers.
