13-page indictment details eBay scam

A Central Peoria man scammed eBay and its customers out of $1 million over two years, a federal grand jury alleged Wednesday.
Anthony L. McEnroe, 35, of 3717 N. Saint Michael Ave. faces two counts of wire fraud, six counts of mail fraud and two counts of money laundering for his alleged involvement in the online scam from 2000 to 2001.
The 13-page indictment details how McEnroe held dozens of auctions to “pre-sell” each of the 50 state quarters before they were released by the U.S. Mint. eBay customers would bid on the right to get the popular coins first. McEnroe also sold gold and silver coins as well.
But McEnroe never filed the orders and used the money he received to pay for another business venture which bought and sold Mexican outdoor clay fireplaces, the indictment alleges.
