Chattanooga Home Sold At Auction For $239,000

An historic home on Tremont Street in North Chattanooga went on the auction block on Saturday morning and brought $239,000.

Steve Rogers, the winning bidder, said he plans to spend a couple of months fixing up the two-story home that was built in 1914. Then he plans to move in.

“I love these old homes,” said Mr. Rogers, who now lives at Dallas Crest.

He said he has fixed up properties before and will do the work on the home that sits on a steep hill at 806 Tremont.

Mr. Rogers is in the Internet business with the Side Trips firm.

He outbid realtor Susan Swicegood, who said she was representing an investor.

Ms. Swicegood said she stopped at $239,000 “because I could tell he was just going to keep going.”

The new owner will also have to pay a 10 percent buyer’s premium to the auction company.

A lot next door went for $6,000.

The property was described as “in a red hot area of North Chattanooga.”

The 2,785-square foot home features a large, wraparound front porch, 10′ ceilings and original woodwork. It also has a mission-style staircase and heart-of-pine floors.

The home was commissioned in 1913 by Cornelius Walker, who moved his family into the new residence the next year. The property was known as the Walker/Hedrick home until 1964, when the Isaac Barnes family acquired it. Mrs. Barnes recently went into an assisted-living facility.
