Hawaii estate to auction $2 million in coins

One of Hawaii’s most valuable estates is to auction a coin collection estimated at being worth $2 million.Samuel Mills Damon’s collection has been kept in a vault since his death in 1924, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reports.The only people to see it were those doing inventory and the estate had previously said it was worth only $9,000.Doyle New York is the auction house selling the collection next year.It includes one of three 1880 Kingdom of Hawaii $10 bills in the world as well as $6,000 in U.S., Hawaiian and foreign coins and medals.After Damon’s last grandchild died last year, the Damon Estate — the fourth largest private landowner in the state — started being liquidated and then terminated.It owned land on Oahu and the Big Island as well as $500 million in shares of BankWest Corp.
