Indiana auctioning off state vehicles and aircraft

Published September 9th, 2005

The state of Indiana auctioned off its 1,000th surplus vehicle on Thursday and Governor Mitch Daniels even served as guest auctioneer. The governor took the mike to auction off a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The actions have brought in about $1.5 million for the state. The Trailblazer sold for $7,100. When he took office the governor said the state had one vehicle for every three state employees, so he elected to sell some off for considerable savings to taxpayers, “probably five million a year or so after we have removed 2,000 vehicles and we won’t stop there. We may find we can bring that down further. That is the target we have given the Department of Administration for this year.” The governor is not stopping there. Airplanes are next. The governor says the state owns 20 airplanes, he plans to sell five or six.
